European Day of Languages

LO: I can celebrate the European Day of languages by finding out about Italy and and saying some words in Italian

Year 6 found out about Italy and learnt to say some words in Italian. They identified Italy on a map of Europe, learnt to say some greetings in Italian (guided by a very helpful pupil ), found out some of the foods which they eat that are Italian.They then used the information they found out to create a fact file all about Italy.

LO: I can say what school subjects I like and dislike

Year 6 learnt the names of the different school subjects. They practised pronouncing the words and identifying words and pictures. They focused on le, la ,l’ and les, remembering which words were masculine and feminine nouns . They then matched and unscrambled words, spelling them correctly. They then used J’aime and Je na’aime pas to say which subjects they liked or disliked.

LO: I can use the definite and indefinite article. I can write a short description about my school.

Year 6 revised saying their new school vocabulary. They revised le,la and les and learnt how to change ‘the’ to a/ an in French, in preparation for writing their paragraph. They were then given a paragraph with a set sentence structure, and substituted some words to make the paragraph their won. They needed to remember to use un / une instead of le / la in front of the noun.

LO: I can pronounce the names of places in my school using Voici

Year 6 revised numbers 1-31 through song. They looked at a French school in Martinique and observed the differences between that school and our school. The video they watched as of a 10 year old boy showing them around his school.

They then learnt the word voici meaning here is and pretended that they were showing someone around he school. They then labelled some pictures using Voici.

Creating a price list

Year 6 practised their knowledge of numbers by looking at the day entrance prices of tickets to 3 different French amusement parks. They also used the question Combien de …. How much, to ask their partners how much different rides cost. They then looked at the sentence structure used when asking what the minimum age or height for different rides is.

Using descriptive words to describe a town

Year 6 revised town vocabulary and were introduced to some adjectives. They played at being a language detective by reading a paragraph and identifying all the words that they knew or recognised including cognates. We then translated the passage orally. They children used the text they had read to ark statements as, true/ vrai or false/ faux. They then had a go at translating parts of sentences which they then matched and wrote into their books.
